- JohnFastman Simplenote is a cross-platform app that allows you to take simple (as the name implies) text-based notes and sync them across your devices. There is markdown support, but little else. It's Evernote with almost everything but the note taking feature taken out. If that appeals to you, it's great.

Like most any other entrepreneur you’d run across, I’ve always got a lot of ideas swimming around in my head. I’m so hardcore as a matter of fact, that my dreams at night are usually based around my current businesses or business I want to start in the future. Yeah, it’s hard for me to turn off the part of my brain that is always telling me to “create more!” and it was somewhat manageable up until a few years ago.
It eventually got to the point where I had too many websites and online businesses going at once, and keeping folders of notes on my computer for each little project of mine was starting to get unwieldy. The feeling of disorganization was intense, and that’s not a feeling I like very much. I need to have a very clear picture of what’s going on at all times or I simply stress out from worrying that I’m forgetting something.
Finally, in late 2011, I discovered Evernote
I love technology – especially technology that helps me build my business – so the main reason for downloading it was to play with a neat piece of tech which might be able to help. I wasn’t expecting to find a way to organize all my business at that point, but I wanted it and Evernote seemed as if it might be an option.

Long story short, Evernote was what I was looking for all along but didn’t even know it. The night I dowloaded it, I spent a couple hours experimenting with creating different folders, tags, and notebooks. It seemed pretty interesting, but I didn’t see it’s true value until I started writing all my blog content with it. Every post I wrote was tagged and categorized, each blog of mine had a separate notebook, and slowly but surely…I was suddenly organized. All of my blog content, project and article ideas, and research were suddenly in one place in a searchable database format. Boom!
Quiver markdown table. Evernote has been a lifesaver for me to say the least. However, it’s not totally perfect. There are some things I don’t like about it, which isn’t a lot if I’m being quite honest, and there are some ways that if falls a bit short. The best way to highlight what I like about Evernote is to list all that out it bullet format.
Here are the pros and cons of using Evernote:
Evernote pros
- All of my content (blog posts, lists, notes, research, etc) is in one place in a searchable format
- The search function is quite good actually – the pro version will even search text in photos and other attachments
- It’s cloud-based, meaning that I can access my data from anywhere
- There’s always a local backup on your device – so if for whatever reason Evernote goes out of business someday, you’ll still have full access to your data
- Tagging and notebook features help to keep things organized. I assign each one of my blogs it’s own notebook, so all of that content stays together for easy reference.
Evernote cons
- There is no way to password protect the desktop version (but you can on mobile)
- You can’t password protect individual notes. It’s all or nothing.
- Cloud-based might be an issue for some

Just to emphasize how much I enjoy using Evernote, I should tell you that I have absolutely zero desire to switch over to what is arguably the best digital note keeper there is at the moment: Microsoft OneNote. It seems as if everyone else I know uses OneNote, but quite frankly, I’m not seeing the attraction.
Evernote does nearly everything I want it to do in a simple and lightweight package, which is probably it’s biggest advantage since it allows me to create and organize content without having to think about the tool I’m using to do it.

Evernote is a very organized virtual file cabinet, and you can use it for writing all kinds of notes, brainstorming, remembering things, archiving and all kinds of different things.
One of the most amazing features of Evernote is that it has a lot of features and variety. With this app you can record audio, take photos, save whole web pages and import any file you wish. Evernote also has a pretty cool sync system and apps for every operating system and device.
The number one thing for which Evernote excels over other similar apps is that it’s an all in one program with many features, and it is perfect for hard-core note takers and collaborations. : )
You most likely don’t have the need for Evernote if you are a light note-taker and just use notes occasionally and don’t use or don’t have a need for the advanced note taking options.
Let’s first start with the Evernote cons:
Evernote is more complex than other note taking apps and, therefore, it can seem a bit difficult to learn at the beginning. After the first couple of days of using it and watching a couple of tutorials for it, your productivity will boost, but if you are looking for the simplest no learning required app Evernote is not it and other free note taking apps will deliver a better result.
Evernote is not completely free. The basic version of Evernote is free, but many of the awesome and cool features of Evernote are in the Evernote Plus and Evernote Premium versions which cost $20/year and $40/year. On the other hand, Evernote’s competitor OneNote is completely free, and it has many of the features that Evernote has in its premium version.
Evernote Pros:

Evernote Premium is by far much better in quality than its competitors.
Evernote Web Clipper is the best on the web although Microsoft Edge with OneNote is close. The new Microsoft Edge browser offers excellent clipping, but it is only available on Edge and this is where Evernote is better, Evernote can be integrated with all the web browsers. A big plus is the Collaboration in Evernote. It is the unbeaten champion of collaboration in these kinds of apps.

When using Evernote, in order to achieve the maximum productivity and the best experience and results it is important to use is for all the features that it offers. If you are using it just for a few tasks, it can be even unproductive. So tip no. 1 Learn it and use it to the fullest. As a journalist and as a Journalist student I use it on my phone to record lectures and interviews and adding a separate notebook for that particular article for example and then digging for more information on the net and web clipping it and underlining the most important things and saving them for later. Then everything is very organized in one Evernote notebook, and this saves me tons of time and it syncs to all of my other devices.
Evernote web clipper is integrated with Google. When you search on Google for something related to the things you’ve clipped it gives you results on what you have already clipped on that topic. This feature is awesomely cool, unique and neat. Another amazing thing about Evernote is that you can create tons of notes and notebooks and keep them all organized well.
All in all Evernote is the undisputed champion, best app for power users who rely on these kinds of apps and are extensions of their brain. ( :
