If you have CHAMPVA and you join a Medicare prescription drug plan, Medicare will be the primary payer and CHAMPVA will be the secondary payer. This means that Medicare will pay first and CHAMPVA will reimburse your co-payment up to 75% of the CHAMPVA allowable amount for covered prescriptions. You will be responsible for any costs not covered by these two programs.

CHAMPVA prescription drug coverage is considered creditable prescription drug coverage, meaning it is at least as good as Medicare prescription drug coverage. This means that if you decide you want to join a Medicare prescription drug plan after you are first eligible, you won't have to pay a late enrollment penalty. You must join during a valid enrollment period.

You are not participating in a federally or state-funded healthcare program under which the medication would be covered, including, but not limited to, Medicare or Medicaid, Medigap, CHAMPVA, VA, DOD, or Tricare.Patients enrolled in the Celgene Commercial Copay Program may have a $25 co-pay per prescription fill. Out-of-network health care providers who accept regular Tricare or Medicare patients usually also accept CHAMPVA patients, making them a good option for individuals who unexpectedly require health care while away from home. CHAMPVA has a $3,000-per-year catastrophic cap, which seniors can take advantage of when major health care emergencies occur. Medicare and ChampVA patients may be required to make a partial payment (e.g. Copayment, coinsurance or deductible) for a specific drug. The AKS statute prohibits a pharmaceutical company from offering or paying, directly or indirectly, any remuneration to induce Medicare or ChampVA patients to purchase a company’s drug. Depending on the health insurance plan, savings may apply toward co-pay, co-insurance or deductible. Eligible commercial patients pay $10 for each 30-day to 90-day prescription for XARELTO ®, subject to program benefit limits. There is no limit to this benefit for the first 90 days, and then a $200 limit for each 30-day supply thereafter.

If you have limited income and resources, you may qualify for extra help that pays your Medicare prescription drug plan costs. If you think you may qualify, you should apply for the extra help and join a Medicare drug plan. You can still keep your CHAMPVA coverage as a secondary payer.

If you are enrolled in the CHAMPVA Meds by Mail program and you join a Medicare prescription drug plan, you will no longer be eligible for Meds by Mail. This is because Meds by Mail is only for those who do not have any other drug coverage.
